Message to Year 9 parents from the History Department: Schindler’s List
Each year the History Department shows the film Schindler’s List in lessons to Year 9 students as part of their study of the Holocaust. The film was rated as a 15 for cinema release by the British Board of Film Classification. However, these ratings apply only to licensed cinemas and not to DVD use in the classroom, and the BBFC recognise that “there are some cases where it might be reasonable to show a film in a specific educational context where it is properly discussed, presented and orchestrated.” We use Schindler’s List in order to stimulate thought and discussion regarding the issues surrounding the Holocaust, and have found that students value it for the insight it offers into such issues.
If you do not wish your child to see the film Schindler’s List in lessons, please contact Mr Nelson at the school in order that alternative provision can be put in place for your child.
