Bryn Celynnog Top of their Senior School League
Congratulations to the Bryn Celynnog Senior Rugby Team who have finished the league season in the number one position and go straight to the play off final. With six wins from six games so far this season the squad has played very well.
The final league game came against our nearest neighbours as a Garth Olwg, Llanhari & Cymer combined team entertained the Bryn Celynnog team at Church Village. The short journey was made on a dry afternoon and the boys were keen to take the fight top the hosts. Many of the players in both teams know each other well as they represent the same clubs or close rivals on a regular basis. This familiarity bred a derby atmosphere with local bragging rights at stake. Things did not start well for Bryn, after a good exit from a deep Garth Olwg kick off a needless penalty was conceded. A line out 5 metres out led to series of drives near the Bryn try line and after a patient run of phases the hosts crossed near the posts. A simple converted try saw Bryn trailing 7 points to nil after 5 minutes.
This nervous start was soon forgotten as the first half developed. Bryn Celynnog settled in to a handling and running game that Garth Olwg, Llanhari & Cymer found it difficult to contain. After several clear breaks and last ditch tackles form the hosts Bryn found themselves breaking through Number 8 Leo Warden. His offload put Tom Jones in to a gap and he scored wide on the left. The boys in black continued to dominate possession and after a break out from their own 22m area thanks to the speedy Ewan Roberts Bryn had a 5 metres attacking scrum of their own. Once again Leo Warden was the provider as he picked from the scrum, committed the defenders and released scrum half Niall Jones to cross for a try, again wide on the left. This gave Bryn a 10 points to 7 lead at half time.
The hosts fought hard throughout the game and Bryn found it difficult to get the space they had enjoyed in earlier fixtures. There were opportunities wide in the 15m channel and the Bryn back three of Roberts, Thorne and King were threatening all through the match. As the second half developed Bryn scored four more tries, Niall Jones with a quick tap and plunge over the line for his double and the final score a length of the field effort. Ewan Roberts was set free down the left wing his kick ahead bounced wickedly fooling the defence and the first wave of Bryn chasers, Ben Newton was first to follow up for Bryn as every good midfielder should and he coolly gathered the ball and crossed to make the final score Garth Olwg, Llanhari & Cymer 7 – Bryn Celynnog 34.
It has been an excellent start to the season for the boys in black; they await the winners of a play off for second place in the East Wales South Championship Division Play Off Final. After the Christmas break the Welsh Senior Schools Cup draw will be made and we hope the team will go deep in to this competition also.
Da iawn fechgyn, ymdrech gwych.
